5 steps to selecting a great school for your child

Step 1: Start with your child in mind.

Consider the READY About My Learner Questions (below)

Step 2: Identify what is important to you and your child.

It’s a big step selecting the right school. Make sure you take time to write down qualities and learning objectives that are important to you and your child.

Step 3: Access resources that can help you determine what schools could be a good fit for your child.

  • Check out the READY School Finder Profiles
  • Look at school websites
  • Attend parent fairs and open houses
  • Talk to friends and family

Step 4: Start setting up visits to your top pick schools.

Contact the schools you are interested in and make an appointment for a visit. If possible, tour the schools during regular school hours and visit a few classes. Avoid visiting schools during the first or last week of a term in order to get a realistic sense of how the school operates.

A good way to have your questions answered is to schedule an appointment with the school principal. If possible, attend an open house, parent-teacher meeting, or other school function that would also provide valuable information about the attitudes of staff, students, and parents.

Be sure to write down your first impressions of each visit.

Step 5: Apply to the schools of your choice
