5 steps to selecting a great school for your child
Step 1:
Start with your child in mind.

Identify what is important to you and your child. It’s a big step selecting the right school. Make sure you take time to write down qualities and learning objectives that are important to you and your child.
Step 3:
Access resources that can help you determine what schools could be a good fit for your child.

- Attend parent fairs and open houses
- Talk to friends and family
Step 4:
Now that you’ve done your research, it is now time to begin setting up visits to your top pick schools. Contact the schools you are interested in and make an appointment for a visit. If possible, tour the schools during regular school hours and visit a few classes. Avoid visiting schools during the first or last week of a term in order to get a realistic sense of how the school operates.
A good way to have your questions answered is to schedule an appointment with the school principal. If possible, attend an open house, parent-teacher meeting, or other school function that would also provide valuable information about the attitudes of staff, students, and parents.
Be sure to write down your first impressions of each visit.

- Is there an ELL program for children that need it?
- Does the school have a curriculum and the necessary supports to accommodate those needs?
Academic Performance
- How do the schools test scores compare to other schools with similar student makeup?
- What special achievements has the school received?
Behavior Policy
- What is the discipline policy and where is it listed?
- What does the school do to develop character?
- Do school personnel call parents when students are absent?
- Does the school have a dress code?
- Does the school have a program that addresses behavior issues?
Safety
- Is the school safe?
- How does the school prevent and handle violence, bullying and harassment?
- How does the school prevent and handle problems with drugs, alcohol, and tobacco?
- Does the school have an emergency plan for local and national emergencies?
- Are there drills (how frequent)?
- How does the school notify parents about emergencies and how does the school communicate with parents in other languages?
