School mission

Thurgood Marshall Middle School (TMMS) is a school that prides itself on advocating for our students and giving our scholars the tools they need to advocate for themselves.

Our school is named after the legendary Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, who we model our sense of commitment, activism, and service.

Our mascot is the Jaguar, symbolizing confidence, courage, and strength. We aim to create a school environment where all students thrive like our namesake, and are confident and courageous, like our mascot, the Jaguar!

While building positive relationships with students, staff, families, and the community, our main goal is to promote academic promise where Justice, Access and Growth are the minimum standards for all students.

Special Courses and Programs include the Student Voice Program and Curriculum, CREW/Advisory and Expeditionary Learning, the 8th-grade capstone project, and an annual Washington trip to visit historic attractions, including the Thurgood Marshall Memorial and Howard University.

Thurgood Marshall Middle School has an onsite School-Based Health Center through Rochester Regional Health available to provide acute physical care to students as well as mental health counseling to students and their families.

School Profiles, Digital Magazine, and Open House Events
School profiles are a great place to start learning about the many unique school offerings in the Rochester City School District. Each profile offers a detailed overview of each school or program to help you decide what offering is right for your child.
